Malahat Battery Assembly Plant
Working Together
The collaboration between Energy Plug Technologies and the Malahat Nation to establish Canada’s first Indigenous-led gigafactory is poised to significantly boost economic growth and job creation in the region.
The construction of the battery energy storage assembly facility in Mill Bay, British Columbia, is expected to create over 100 local jobs, with a focus on engaging Indigenous workers. This initiative not only provides employment opportunities but also fosters skill development in advanced manufacturing and clean energy technologies. The gigafactory aims to produce up to 1 gigawatt-hour of battery energy storage systems annually, catering to residential, commercial, utility, and data center markets across North America. By leveraging British Columbia’s clean energy supply, the facility will contribute to environmental sustainability while enhancing grid stability and resilience. Furthermore, the partnership serves as a model for Indigenous economic development, showcasing how collaborative efforts can lead to shared prosperity and innovation in the clean energy sector.

The Canadian government’s 5% Indigenous Procurement Target mandates that federal contracts award at least 5% of their value to Indigenous businesses, opening new markets for BESS solutions. This initiative, supported by a Transformative Indigenous Procurement Strategy and strategic energy programs, emphasizes community sovereignty and partnership-based opportunities that Malahat Battery Technologies are ready for.
